What if your dog's daily walk could also reinforce essential training commands? Our Walk & Train program combines exercise with real-world training, turning routine dog walks into valuable learning experiences - all without requiring extra time from your busy schedule.

What is Walk & Train?
Walk & Train is exactly what it sounds like: professional dog walking combined with continuous training reinforcement. While we're out giving your dog the exercise and fresh air they need, we're also working on essential commands like:
- Loose leash walking – Teaching your dog to walk calmly without pulling
- Sit and stay – Building impulse control and patience
- Focus and attention – Helping your dog check in with their handler amid distractions
- Real-world socialization – Navigating pedestrians, other dogs, traffic, and environmental stimuli
The beauty of this program is that training fits seamlessly into your dog's daily routine. There's no need to carve out separate time for training sessions - your dog is learning while getting the exercise they already need.
How Walk & Train Works in Fairfield County Neighborhoods
Every neighborhood in Westport, Fairfield, Easton, and Stratford presents unique training opportunities. Our Walk & Train program adapts to your local environment:
Downtown Westport & Fairfield
Busy sidewalks near shops and cafes provide excellent real-world distraction training. We practice polite passing, sitting at crosswalks, and maintaining focus despite pedestrian traffic and outdoor dining areas.
Residential Neighborhoods in Easton
Quieter streets with occasional wildlife sightings (deer, rabbits, squirrels) offer perfect scenarios for teaching "leave it" commands and maintaining attention despite natural temptations.
Shoreline Areas (Compo Beach, Jennings Beach)
From October through March, when dogs are allowed on many Fairfield County beaches, we work on recall training in open spaces, distance commands, and calm behavior around water and birds.
Trail Walking (Longbrook Park, Devil's Den)
Wooded trails teach your dog to navigate uneven terrain, respond to commands off-pavement, and practice loose leash walking without the structure of sidewalks.
Why Walk & Train is Perfect for Busy Fairfield County Families
Life in Fairfield County is busy. Between commutes to NYC, after-school activities, and demanding work schedules, finding time for both daily dog walks AND separate training sessions can feel impossible. Walk & Train solves this problem by combining both needs into one service.
Benefits for Working Professionals
- Your dog gets midday exercise and training while you're at the office
- Consistent reinforcement from professional trainers, not just weekend training attempts
- Reduced guilt about leaving your dog home all day - they're being mentally stimulated, not just physically tired
Benefits for Families with Young Children
- Your dog learns to walk politely on leash, making family walks safer and more enjoyable
- Better impulse control around children (sitting patiently, not jumping)
- Reduced stress behaviors like pulling, lunging, or excessive barking on walks
Benefits for Senior Dog Owners
- Professional training support if mobility makes traditional training classes difficult
- Gentle reinforcement of commands your senior dog may have forgotten
- Safer walks through better leash manners and responsiveness
The Science Behind Training During Walks
Modern dog training research emphasizes contextual learning - teaching dogs to respond to commands in the environments where they'll actually need to use them. A dog who sits perfectly in your living room might struggle to sit at a busy crosswalk unless they've practiced in that real-world context.
Walk & Train provides this crucial real-world practice. According to certified animal behaviorists, dogs learn best when:
- Training happens in varied environments (not just in one room at home)
- Commands are reinforced consistently by the same person over time
- Training is short, frequent, and positive rather than long, sporadic, and stressful
Our Walk & Train program checks all three boxes. Your dog experiences training across different Fairfield County locations, works with the same familiar walker regularly (more on that below), and receives short bursts of positive reinforcement throughout each 30-minute walk.
Why W-2 Employees Make Walk & Train More Effective
Here's where 203 Pet Service differs from app-based dog walking services like Rover or Wag. We don't use independent contractors or gig workers. Every member of our team is a W-2 salaried employee who has been:
- Background checked and drug tested
- Trained in our Walk & Train methodology
- Employed by us for years (many team members have been with us for over a decade)
This model matters immensely for training consistency. When your dog works with the same professional walker every day, they build a relationship. Your dog learns to trust that person, respond to their cues, and anticipate the routine. Training becomes second nature because it's woven into their daily relationship with a familiar, trusted handler.
In contrast, app-based services often send different people every walk. Your dog might see five different walkers in a week, making consistent training nearly impossible. They're constantly adjusting to new handlers, new communication styles, and new energy levels.
How Walk & Train Prepares Your Dog for Vacations
Here's an often-overlooked benefit of our Walk & Train program: it makes vacations stress-free. When you sign up for daily dog walking with 203 Pet Service, you're not just paying for exercise and training - you're building a trusted relationship that pays dividends when you travel.
Think about it: When vacation time comes, your dog recognizes their walker's car pulling up. They wag their tail at that familiar voice. They settle into their routine without anxiety because this isn't a stranger - it's someone they've walked with hundreds of times.
This relationship transforms pet sitting from a stressful experience into a comfortable extension of your dog's normal routine. Your dog doesn't panic when you leave because they know Sarah (or Sean, or Bill) will be there soon, just like always.
This is why we built our business around W-2 salaried employees with long tenure. We're not trying to fill one-off gigs. We're building careers for professional pet care specialists who become part of your dog's life - and that continuity makes all the difference when you need to travel.
What Makes a Good Walk & Train Candidate?
Almost any dog can benefit from Walk & Train, but some profiles are especially well-suited:
Puppies (6 months to 2 years)
Young dogs are learning how to navigate the world. Walk & Train provides crucial socialization and helps establish good leash manners before bad habits form. Early training during puppyhood sets the foundation for a lifetime of polite walking.
Rescue Dogs or Newly Adopted Dogs
Dogs transitioning to a new home often come with unknown histories. Walk & Train helps build confidence, teaches them your neighborhood's routines, and establishes trust with a consistent handler who can report progress to you.
High-Energy Breeds
Labs, Golden Retrievers, Aussies, Border Collies, and other energetic breeds need both physical and mental stimulation. Walk & Train tires them out physically and mentally, reducing destructive behaviors at home.
Dogs with Leash Reactivity
If your dog pulls, lunges, or barks on leash, Walk & Train provides daily practice with a professional. Over time, consistent reinforcement can significantly improve leash manners and reduce reactive behaviors.
Senior Dogs Maintaining Skills
Older dogs benefit from gentle reinforcement of commands they learned years ago. Walk & Train keeps their minds sharp and helps prevent cognitive decline through regular mental engagement.

Getting Started with Walk & Train in Fairfield County
If you're interested in our Walk & Train program, here's how it works:
1. Schedule a Meet & Greet
We start with a no-obligation meeting at your home. You'll meet one of our team members, discuss your dog's needs and training goals, and see if we're a good fit. There's no pressure to sign up.
2. Share Training Priorities
During the meet & greet, tell us what commands you're working on at home. If you're practicing "sit" before meals, we'll reinforce "sit" during walks. If loose leash walking is a priority, we'll focus there. We align with your training approach.
3. Start Your Membership
Walk & Train is included in our dog walking memberships. Choose the frequency that works for you - daily walks, weekday-only, or a few times per week. The more consistent the schedule, the faster you'll see training progress.
4. Track Progress Through Our App
After every walk, you'll receive a detailed visit summary through our Time to Pet app, including photos, walk route, bathroom breaks, and specific training notes. You'll see exactly what commands were practiced and how your dog responded.
Frequently Asked Questions About Walk & Train
Do you charge extra for Walk & Train?
Yes, Walk & Train is a premium service that includes specialized training during every walk. Pricing varies based on your membership package and service frequency. To get a customized quote that fits your dog's needs and your schedule, please fill out our contact form on the homepage and we'll be in touch with specific pricing details.
Can you work with dogs who haven't had formal training?
Absolutely. We start where your dog is currently at. If they don't know any commands yet, we'll begin with basics. If they know commands but don't respond reliably, we'll work on reinforcement.
What if my dog has behavioral issues (aggression, extreme fear, etc.)?
For dogs with serious behavioral challenges, we recommend working with a certified behavior consultant in addition to our Walk & Train program. We're happy to coordinate with your trainer or behaviorist to support their plan during walks. For minor issues like pulling or jumping, Walk & Train is often sufficient.
Important: We do not work with dogs that are handler aggressive. For safety reasons, all Walk & Train dogs must be comfortable being handled by our trained team members.
How long before I see results?
This varies by dog and issue. Many clients notice improvement in loose leash walking within 2-4 weeks of consistent daily walks. More complex training goals (like overcoming leash reactivity) may take several months. The key is consistency - daily walks with the same handler yield the fastest progress.
Can I request specific training goals?
Yes! We tailor Walk & Train to your priorities. Whether you want focus on recall, loose leash walking, sitting at crosswalks, or ignoring squirrels, just let us know during your meet & greet.
What happens if I cancel my membership?
Walk & Train memberships require a minimum 3-month commitment to ensure your dog receives consistent training and builds a strong relationship with their walker. After the initial commitment period, you can pause or cancel with proper notice. However, training progress is cumulative - the longer your dog works with the same walker, the stronger the results.
Should I also book dog training sessions?
We recommend occasional in-home dog training appointments to complement your Walk & Train membership. This ensures you're communicating with your dog using the same techniques and commands our walkers use, which reinforces the training and creates consistent expectations for your dog at home.
What if my dog doesn't need training?
Not all dogs require Walk & Train! We also offer traditional dog walking services for dogs who just need exercise and bathroom breaks without the training component. This is a great option for well-behaved dogs or those who have already completed training. Contact us to discuss which service is the best fit for your dog.

What Our Clients Say About Walk & Train
"We started using 203 Pet for daily dog walks when our Golden was 8 months old. Not only did Sean tire him out every day, but the leash training made family walks so much better. Now when we go on vacation, our dog gets excited when Sean arrives - there's no stress because it's the same person he's walked with for three years."
"As a single parent working in NYC, I felt so guilty about leaving my dog home all day. Walk & Train solved two problems at once - exercise and training. I don't have time for separate training classes, so having it built into our daily walks has been a game-changer."
"Our rescue dog came to us with zero leash manners. After two months of Walk & Train with the same walker, he's like a different dog. He sits at crosswalks, doesn't pull anymore, and actually pays attention to me on walks. I'm so grateful for the consistency."
